Chrysoprase is a variety of chalcedony quartz whose vivid green color comes from nickel inclusions within its microcrystalline structure. It's one of the rarest and most valuable varieties of chalcedony. The finest Chrysoprase historically came from Silesia (now Poland); today major sources include Australia (particularly Queensland), Brazil, and Tanzania. Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians all prized Chrysoprase — Alexander the Great was said to wear it in his girdle during battle. Note: Chrysoprase can fade in prolonged sunlight — store it away from direct sun to preserve its color.
